ABOUT
Birla planetarium of Kolkata, India is one of the largest museums in Asia. It came into existence in the year 1962 and the credit for establishing this wonderful center of science, communication & environment goes to Birla Education Trust. It is situated at the Eastern metropolitan bypass of Calcutta
Popularly known as taramandal, the planetarium was inaugurated in 1963 by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. It has an electronics laboratory for design and fabrication of science equipment. It has an astronomy gallery that maintains a huge collection of fine paintings and celestial models of renowned astronomers. The Planetarium also has an astronomical observatory equipped with a Celestron C-14 Telescope and solar filter. It has a capacity of 500.
Daily programs are conducted in English, Bengali and Hindi from 12:00 to 19:00 hrs except on Mondays.
HOW TO REACH
Birla Planetarium, Kolkata is easily accessible by various modes of public transportation available in Kolkata. You can take local buses, mini buses or metered taxis, which are readily available from various parts of the city to take you to the planetarium.
Another convenient way to reach the planetarium is by availing the very efficient underground metro railway.
